Where do AI answers get their information? How to see which websites AI cites

Quick answer

AI answers draw on two sources: knowledge learned during training, and web pages retrieved in real time when web search is on. Only the second comes with visible sources. To find out whom AI cites, ask a fixed set of questions repeatedly with web search on, record every citation link attached to each answer, and then aggregate by question and by platform. There is no universal answer to "which platform is cited most"; it varies widely by question and model, so the only way to know is to test with your own questions.

Details

Record type Meaning What it tells you
Citation The answer marks a source for a specific statement This source supports part of the answer
Retrieval result The model found it, but may not have used it This source entered the candidate pool
URL in the answer text A link written into the answer Not necessarily a real source; needs checking

Record them separately. Do not describe "was retrieved" as "was cited by AI", let alone "was recommended by AI".

How to find out which websites AI cites

  1. Fix a set of questions: use category questions real users would ask, without your brand name in them.
  2. Fix the entry point and conditions: same platform, same web-search setting, several runs per question.
  3. Save every answer: keep the raw answer, time, model, and every citation link and title, not just the first few domains.
  4. Aggregate: rank sources by how many questions they cover × how many models they appear in.

Use the same method for competitors: in answers that recommend a competitor, look at which pages are cited.

Are official websites, Zhihu and encyclopedias cited?

All of them can be, depending on the type of question:

  • Brand fact questions (what a brand does, what it costs): the official site, encyclopedias and official accounts are more likely to be cited, provided the official site actually states that information clearly.
  • Category recommendation questions (which product in a category is good): third-party roundups, reviews and Q&A content are cited more often; brand sites less so.
  • How-to questions (how to do or choose something): tutorials, technical communities and trade media are more common.

So "where to publish" should be worked backwards from the questions you care about: first see whom the answers to those questions actually cite, instead of posting on every platform where you have an account.

How much do citations affect recommendations?

There is no reliable universal figure. What is clear is that in web-search answers the model's reasons for recommending often come from the content it cites. If the cited pages do not include you, or describe you in outdated terms, you are unlikely to be recommended. To judge whether a piece of content worked, retest under the same conditions rather than looking at a single answer.

Common questions

Q: Which platforms does AI cite most?
A: There is no fixed ranking. Citations differ widely by question and model; test with the questions you care about.

Q: Does AI cite official websites?
A: Yes, especially for brand fact questions, provided the site states the information clearly and readably and does not block AI search crawlers.

Q: Do encyclopedias matter for AI answers?
A: They matter more for "what is it" questions about brands and concepts; for "which one is good" recommendation questions, third-party reviews and roundups usually have more influence.
