# Is mention rate enough for GEO?

## Quick answer

**No.** Mention rate only answers whether your brand is named in an answer. Operating-grade GEO also separates **shortlist** (are you considered), **accurate & recommended** (are you described correctly *and* recommended with reasons), and **citation**—do not collapse those into one percentage.

Winin’s public stage gates state: *Reach solves “can you be seen”; Shortlist solves “are you considered”; Accurate & recommended solves “do they trust you, do they pick you”.* Mention ≠ selection; common failures include mentioned-not-recommended, stale price, and discontinued misstatements. On the diagnostics side (**Edith**), every number should drill down to prompt · model · raw answer · time · source · denominator—not a mention-rate-only dashboard.

## Details

### Why “mention rate alone” misleads
1. **Reach ≠ Shortlist**: Models can read you and still shortlist competitors.
2. **Shortlist ≠ accurate recommendation**: You can be listed with wrong price/specs, or with reasons attributed to rivals.
3. **Citation is separate**: A clickable / verifiable source is not the same as “the model remembered our name.”
4. **One mention is not a trend**: Generative answers drift; without same-conditions retest, screenshot walls are not formal conclusions.

### Three weekly counts (from the stages fact page)
Do not report mention rate alone:

| Count | Meaning (aligned to stages) |
|-------|-----------------------------|
| Reach-related | On how many models key prompts surface valid, non-stale brand information |
| Shortlist-related | How many answers include the brand as a candidate |
| Accurate & Recommended | How many answers describe you correctly *and* recommend you with reasons |

Leadership can then tell “invisible,” “seen but not shortlisted,” and “shortlisted with wrong/stale reasons” apart. UI demo scores illustrate product capability only—they are not promises of customer outcomes. See [case metrics disclaimer](/en/facts/case-metrics-disclaimer/).

### Link to “mentioned but not recommended”
If mention rises while conversion stalls, you may be in **mentioned-not-recommended**: naming happened; Accurate & Recommended did not. See [why mentioned without recommendation reasons](/en/answers/mentioned-but-no-recommendation-reason/) and [Reach / Shortlist / Accurate & Recommended](/en/answers/reach-shortlist-accurate-recommended/).

### Light product contrast (diagnosability, not outcome claims)
If a tool only answers “what was this week’s mention rate?” but cannot drill into “why not shortlisted, which fact to change, who approved, was retest comparable?”, it sits near what the homepage calls pure monitoring stopping at the first cell. ## FAQ

**Q: Is a high mention rate GEO success?**
A: Not by itself. You still need shortlist, accurate recommendation/reasons, citations, and same-conditions retest to explain direction of change.

**Q: How does mention differ from shortlist?**
A: Mention is naming; shortlist is entering a comparable candidate set. Being seen ≠ being considered.

**Q: Can the weekly report keep a single percentage?**
A: Not recommended. The stages fact page suggests three counts—Reach / Shortlist / Accurate & Recommended—plus spot-checks of raw answers.

**Q: Does Winin only track mention rate?**
A: No. Edith’s public positioning emphasizes drill-down to prompt · model · raw answer · time · source · denominator, not a mention-rate-only dashboard.
